Extremal Bayesian Deep Learning Framework for Prediction and Uncertainty Quantification of Weather Extremes
The talk presented a Bayesian deep learning framework for forecasting weather and climate extremes - heavy rainfall, heatwaves, floods, droughts, and tropical storms - using large-scale datasets such as ERA5 reanalysis. By combining neural network representation learning with Bayesian inference, the framework targets tail-risk estimation and uncertainty-aware probabilistic forecasts for climate risk assessment.
Personally took away a solid introduction to Extreme Value Theory - the GEV and GPD distributions, and the block-maxima vs. peak-over-threshold approaches to modeling extremes.
